Ignore my first post - I tried to delete it. An essential question is very broad in scope and should elicit other quetions or thoughts. It should relate to several units and may be a year long question. An example is.... how do you see math used in every day life?
An essential question is a large, life question geared to make students ask more questions about the subject. It has no "yes" or "no" answers. Examples would be:
1. How did Obama's political affiliations throughout his life affect his presedentail campaign? 2. Why is the hydrosphere important to us? 3. Why should we "go green" or should we?
Essential question is the umbrella it is the big idea, and it covers the unit and content questions that guide the development of the learning outcomes.
The essential question is the "big picture". It can not be answered by a single yes or no. This question pertains to how it can be used in real life situations in a variety of cross categories.
I am originally from Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. I relocated to Arizona in 1990. I have been teaching in a small Arizona community on the border of the Navajo Indian reservation. I have worked with middle school students for the last 8 years. This explains my level of insanity.
Essential questions are content specific and relate to a daily objective or standard. An example is...what is an angle betwwen 91-179 degrees called?
